The July 17, 2020, Surfrider Foundation San Francisco Chapter e-newsletter said, "As Surfrider moves forward supporting diversity, equity and inclusion not just in surfing, but in our community, we will be screening the movie White Wash on our Surfrider Foundation - California Facebook page.

"We're very fortunate to have the film's producer, Airrion Copeland and potentially a couple other speakers joining us after for a Q & A discussion. 

"White Wash, the documentary, is a film exploring the complexity of race in America through the struggle and triumph of black surfers. White Wash is a historical exploration of race, identity, and the myths we live by and that ultimately unite us all."'

Just another Friday with Surfrider.

This past Friday the Portland Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation partnered with Calling All Crows' Alternative Break Tour for a service project. We met at the Jupiter Hotel where the crew was staying that night, and then walked the neighborhood to visit and clean up the City of Portland's Green Streets Program gardens.

Sustainable Surf: sustainability in action

This post I wrote originally appeared on Care2.com:

Care2 recently published a post about the greening of the surfing industry, in which we briefly mentioned Sustainable Surf.

Sustainable Surf is a newer nonprofit based in Southern California that helps the surfing industry and community become examples of sustainability in action. The organization recently launched a new program called Waste to Waves.

The program’s first campaign is “Turn Your Trash Into Slash,” meaning you can give the organization your styrofoam and a Southern California company Marko will turn it into new surfboards. Partner stores in Northern and Southern California have receptacles available for customers’ use, and at least one school group, 7th Grade science class at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, ran a drive to collect community members’ styrofoam for recycling by Waste to Waves.

California State Parks > stop the cuts

Just grabbed this from today's Surfrider Foundation e-newsletter:

Over the last several months, Surfrider has written about the plan to close 70 state parks--the proposal has been on the table in order to help close the state's budget gap. As if that weren’t bad enough, there is a new proposal to eliminate all seasonal lifeguards and 20% of ranger positions in California state parks if the Governor’s November ballot initiative for new revenue isn’t successful. Despite the fact that a decision on that initiative is ten months away, the Governor is demanding that these state park reductions be made this spring.

New: Surfrider San Diego's Personal Ashtrays

The Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter & Hold On To Your Butt (HOTYB) Committee is excited to introduce ... Surfrider pocket ashtrays! The ashtrays are made out of tin - Rise Above Plastics!

It's important to responsibly dispose of your butts because the filters are made out of plastic. As a result, the cigarette butts are not biodegradable. They also contain chemicals, which are released into the environment when dropped down a storm drain or flicked onto the sidewalk.

Look for these personal ashtrays at San Diego Chapter events or contact the San Diego Chapter at HOTYB(@)surfridersd.org to order ashtrays! You can place a personal order for just one ashtray, or if you are a Surfrider Foundation Chapter then you can order in bulk for your chapter's use.

The students of Newport High School in Newport, Oregon developed a special "for the love of beaches" issue of their student newspaper entitled "Sandtuary" to be distributed up and down the entire Oregon coast during spring break week.

This is the students' manifesto:

Jack Johnson on Making a Difference

This Jack Johnson interview was conducted at last month's Mile High Festival in Colorado. Jack headlined the festival on Saturday night.

CNN: You're giving away 100 percent of the proceeds from your upcoming tour, and you did it on your 2008 tour, too. How can you afford to do that?

Jack Johnson: Everybody makes their salary still, everybody on the road makes a living doing it. The money that we're making from the shows, we're putting back into the communities we're playing at. We can't promise we'll do it forever. It's just something fun to do this summer.

CNN: Most musicians count on touring profits for their livelihood.

Johnson: The CD sales have done fine for us, so we feel really lucky to be able to use the touring as a fundraising tool. It's kinda nice.

CNN: How do you divvy up the funds?

Johnson: There's between five and 10 local nonprofit groups that come out to every show, and money from that show goes directly to the groups -- a certain percentage of it from that night.

And then at the end of the whole tour, we take the rest of it and we put it into a foundation. The nice thing with that is it's a perpetual deal, so we give away the interest every year. It's actually rewarding to see the tangible things -- this amount of instruments are going to this school district -- or to see photographs of a garden that got built from some of the funds. People write to us for grants [at his website, AllAtOnce.org].

And of course, the encore was nothing to scoff at, four songs deep closing with "Better Together," where Johnson brought everyone -- everyone -- including ALO, G. Love, Paula Fuga, and even his roadies, techs and fan club onstage, encouraging them to pick up anything they could. And they did. Roadies played tambourine, fans played bells and drummed on empty Zephyr Hills jugs.

Seriously?

I finally read Rolling Stone's June 24th piece The Spill, the Scandal and the President today. I pulled a few sentences from the article, and added the bullet points and the graphics.

* Obama unveiled an aggressive push for new offshore drilling in the Arctic, the Southeastern seaboard and new waters in the Gulf, closer to Florida than ever before.



* Obama and Salazar appeared together at Andrews Air Force Base on March 31st to introduce the plan. The stagecraft was pure Rove in its technicolor militaristic patriotism.



* Two days later, Obama issued this statement:

"It turns out, by the way, that oil rigs today generally don't cause spills. They are technologically very advanced."

* Eighteen days later, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the Deepwater Horizon rig went off like a bomb.



Hmm.

Offshore drilling? NOT THE ANSWER. It's time to speak up.

NO ONE has been testing for dispersants in Florida's coastal waters - Until Now

This past Sunday beach goers in Northwest Florida (directly south of Alabama) saw a sheen on the water. People who entered the water reported health concerns including coughing up blood, shortness of breath, and skin and eye irritations.

No one has been testing these waters for traces of the dispersants that BP is using to clean up the spill. The agencies who are testing these waters for oil are not publishing the results of their tests.

The Chapter Chair (President) of Surfrider's Emerald Coast Chapter spoke with Surgeon General Regina Benjamin about this during a July 15 press conference in Pensacola, Florida. Here's a video of that conversation -



The Emerald Coast Chapter has decided not to wait any longer - they've decided to test the waters for oil and for traces of dispersants themselves. They will publish the results.

Due to the severity of the spill, the tests may need to be conducted for the next 5 - 10 years. The cost for testing dispersants is about $350/per test and has to be shipped to a lab in Washington State. Additionally, oil testing is about $80/per sample. The Emerald Coast Chapter is entirely volunteer-run and is self-financing the tests. You can make a contribution here:

Tens of thousands of people who support clean energy and oppose offshore drilling are expected to participate in more than 700 Hands Across the Sand events this Saturday, June 26.

The events are open to everyone - no RSVP required!
