This past Friday the Portland Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation partnered with Calling All Crows' Alternative Break Tour for a service project. We met at the Jupiter Hotel where the crew was staying that night, and then walked the neighborhood to visit and clean up the City of Portland's Green Streets Program gardens.
Thanks to Matt Wilhelm from Calling All Crows for snapping and sharing this photo of Rick and I giving opening remarks!

State Radio has released a human rights-centered video for their song "Calling All Crows," also the title of their humanitarian organization that aims to end violence against women.
State Radio and Calling All Crows raised $100,000 in 2009 to provide fuel-efficient stoves to women in Darfur. This campaign allowed many of these women to remain in IDP camps, thus preventing them from becoming victims of violence in the more violent regions of Sudan.
"Calling All Crows" is the third track off State Radio's third album, "Let It Go." They're touring with the John Butler Trio this summer.
Did that go a little too fast for you? :) Here are the lyrics:
Cause I come from the land of the shaman Where the innocent are taken to the pavement Won’t somebody just tell them Won’t somebody oh, won’t somebody oh oh oh oh oh...
Won’t you please look after my children All the words that are coming from the mouths of the women From the northland down to the rio grande New England town to Oregon Wont somebody oh oh oh oh oh
So we’re calling all the crows They comin' in slow It's gonna be a show down Said the rebel to the revolutionary come with me And if you feel like you are witnessing a movement Then get up girl and let them know you're free
Cause I come from the land of the shaman Where the world is looking up you know it's changing Won't somebody just tell them Won't somebody oh, won't somebody oh oh oh oh oh…
So we're calling all the crows They comin' in slow It's gonna be a show down Said the rebel to the revolutionary come with me And if you feel like you are witnessing a movement Then get up girl and let them know you're free
Said the rebel to the rebel I will go if you come with me I'm tired of living in a fable Blue sky I'd love to see The journey must continue and does not stop in me, no Cause the rivers wide but with all of us we can reach from side to side and it is here that we must all ?
So we're calling all the crows They comin' in slow It's gonna be a show down Said the rebel to the revolutionary come with me And if you feel like you are witnessing a movement Then get up girl and let them know you're free
It's just a murder of crows They comin' in slow It's gonna be a show down Said the rebel to the revolutionary follow me And if you feel like you are witnessing a movement Then get up girl and let them know you're free You got to get up girl and let them know you're free You got to get up girl and girl let them know you're free
I did a community service project with members of State Radio, Calling All Crows, and the band's fans as a representative of the HeadCount San Francisco Team earlier this year, and then set up a HeadCount outreach table at the band's Fillmore Auditorium show that night.

Then I got to work with them again on behalf of Surfrider, regarding a stream cleanup with the Washington, DC Surfrider Chapter.

Then when the band was in DC again for the Save My Oceans Tour they again joined Surfrider DC for a cleanup, and Surfrider had an outreach booth at the concert.
The latest is that they are joining the Surfrider San Francisco Chapter for a beach cleanup on May 23. LOVE THEM!
So I am very excited about the band's newest announcement - Alternative Break Tour II: Northeast Corridor! - saw it on Facebook this AM. Sounds like this will be a really good time:)
From Calling All Crows:
When we decided to host Calling All Crows' first ever Alternative Break Tour this past March, we weren't really sure what to expect. But with an incredible crew of volunteers, awesome service partners, delicious food, local flavor, some great rock shows in truly historic venues, and an unforgettable experience for all involved, we decided we just had to do it again!
But why wait until next spring?!
We don't want to wait either, which is why it is our pleasure to announce...

State Radio and Calling All Crows are amazing! I participated in a State Radio service event and did outreach at State Radio's recent Fillmore show, on behalf of HeadCount's San Francisco Team. Tomorrow, the Surfrider Foundation's Washington, DC Chapter is hosting the Calling All Crows DC service event, and will have an outreach table at the State Radio 9:30 Club show.
On Thursday, March 4th at 7:30pm (local time) 450+ American and Canadian movie theaters will hold CARE-sponsored "Half the Sky" events in celebration of International Womens Day.
Inspired by moving stories from the critically-acclaimed book "Half the Sky" by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, the March 4th event will feature an uplifting night of music, celebrity discussion and the world premiere of "Woinshet," a powerful short film directed by Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei and Lisa Leone that chronicles the struggles of an Ethiopian woman who triumphs over violence and discrimination.
The event was originally recorded on February 11th in NYC; these March 4th events are a re-broadcast of that event.
Here's the trailer for the event -
