Learn How to Be Resilient in Times of Crisis

June 4, 2020, Option B Facebook.

Option B is an online community that provides support to people needing help in the face of adversity—specifically grief and loss; health, illness and injury; abuse and sexual assault; divorce and family challenges; incarceration; raising resilient kids; and resilience.

It is inspired by the book Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant.

The nonprofit, an initiative of the Sheryl Sandberg & Dave Goldberg Family Foundation, is a great resource.

Watch the recording of a conversation Sheryl and Adam had on "Resilience in Crisis" that took place on Facebook Live on April 16. It's full of helpful insight and advice on how to help yourself and others.

Excerpt from the book Option B

I subscribe to the monthly Option B e-newsletter. This is an excerpt from the April 16, 2020 e-newsletter.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has changed life as we know it—right now, we’re all living some form of Option B. Many of us are experiencing anxiety, fear, and loneliness. For those dealing with hardships like abuse, loss of a loved one, and financial insecurity, this crisis is even more difficult.

"There is no “right” way to navigate these challenges; the important thing is that you care for yourself and others in the ways that feel right to you.

"To help you do just that, our team will be sharing a variety of free resources over the coming weeks. One of these, which is available now, is an excerpt from Option B with a new foreword from Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant."

This is my favorite part of the excerpt.

"There’s no one way to grieve and there’s no one way to comfort. What helps one person won’t help another, and even what helps one day might not help the next. Growing up, I was taught to follow the Golden Rule: treat others as you want to be treated. But when someone is suffering, instead of following the Golden Rule, we need to follow the Platinum Rule: treat others as they want to be treated. Take a cue from the person in distress and respond with understanding—or better yet, action.

"As I was struggling to get back on my feet at home and at work, friends and colleagues would graciously ask, 'Is there anything I can do?' They were sincere, but for most of them, I did not have an answer. Author Bruce Feiler believes the problem lies in the offer to 'do anything.' He writes that 'while well meaning, this gesture unintentionally shifts the obligation to the aggrieved. Instead of offering ‘anything,’ just do something.' Bruce points to friends who sent packing supplies to someone who was moving out after getting divorced and others who held a 'fire shower,' a variation on a bridal shower, for a friend who had lost her home. My colleague Dan Levy told me that when his son got sick and he was by his side at the hospital, a friend texted him, 'What do you NOT want on a burger?' Dan appreciated the effort. 'Instead of asking if I wanted food, he made the choice for me but gave me the dignity of feeling in control.' Another friend texted Dan that she was available for a hug if he needed one and would be in the hospital lobby for the next hour whether he came downstairs or not."
