Teachings on Great Compassion from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Khadro-la, and Geshe Dorji Damdul

His Holiness the Dalai Lama with an unknown cat.

This blog post was inspired by an interview with Khadro-la published by Thrive Global on January 18, 2018.

Khadro-la

Khadro-la was asked "Is meditation helpful in achieving a kind heart? Do you have any tips for meditation?”

Khadro-la replied, “Many people like meditation. Many people think of it as single-pointed concentration. In my opinion, meditation is to cultivate a habit of an honest mindset and a kind heart. If we develop and increase our qualities of kindness and honesty, we can get rid of so many different kinds of suffering.

"Otherwise, if we think we want to meditate, and we just sit still and we don’t think about anything in particular, then what we are doing is actually resting our mind, giving our minds a little break. But it is not very constructive or useful. It does not decrease our negative mindsets of anger, attachments, etc. It does not increase our qualities of kindness, truthfulness and wisdom. So, we might be able to sit still single-pointedly for four or five hours, but what’s the point? It’s like a pigeon!”

His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Watch His Holiness the Dalai Lama teach on developing a kind heart and the altruistic mind cherishing others at the main temple in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India on the Tenzin Wangyal YouTube channel.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama says, "For the lama it is fortunate to have this opportunity to teach about bodhichitta. For you the disciples, also, this occasion bodhichitta, the altruistic mind cherishing others over oneself ... you are fortunate to hear a teaching on it."

A Spontaneous Song Invoking the Heart of Noble Tara by Khadro-la

Khadro-la, @tblimql instagram.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama and His Eminence Kyabje Ling Rinpoche have recommended reciting the Tara mantra to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Khadro-la (Neljorma Khadro Namsel Drönme, Khandro Namsel Dorje) wrote the following message.

"At the onset of the coronavirus, COVID-19, several Khenpos, Lamas, along with various friends from different countries all around the world, asked me to compose a method to accomplish Noble Tara; replete with mantra recitation and petitions to her exalted mind. Accordingly, I wrote down whatever came to mind: Khandro Namsel Dorje, Boudhanath, Kathmandu, Nepal."

The spontaneous song of a Dakini invoking the heart of Noble Tara

Starlike reflections arise in the clear mirror of the primordially pure expanse and are perfected in the equal taste of illusion. Thus, whatever occurs is devoid of both coming and abiding. While abiding in this evenness, whatever is wished for arises without effort.

Holder of an Utpala, who grants refuge and liberates from samsara and nirvana, arisen from me – the mere notion of a true self – appearance and emptiness conjoined; unimpeded and all-pervading Goddess who protects from every fear, your four activities are born of bliss and emptiness:

Tara, you are uncreated, unceasing, and liberate to the very limits of space itself.

Tara, without appearance or obstruction, your supreme form is great radiance.

Tara, your non-existent form appears clearly as the perfection of samsara and nirvana.

Tara, you are the naked great bliss of awareness and emptiness that pervades all.

Tara, having embraced your son of luminosity and are gathered into a single sphere.

Tara, devoid of effort, you are the effortless clarity of the four joys.

Tara, most marvelous, there is no doubt of your granting relief to the weary.

Tara, most beautiful, you are perfect in and of yourself and pervade all.

Tara, you are the dharmadhatu – mother of all Sugatas

Tara, you are a special friend to all practitioners.

Tara, you are the mother who cuts the very life-force of negative action.

Tara, you are the mother who distinguishes between happiness and sadness.

Tara, you are the motherly Samaya to all who keep their vows.

Tara, you are the motherly channels of all mantrikas.

Tara, you are motherly suchness, utterly free of the two obscurations.

Tara, you are the simultaneous and spontaneous perfection of samsara and nirvana.

Tara, you are the cloud-like formations of the interdependent ten-grounds and five-paths.

Tara, you are the supreme mother of all Buddhas – Tare-ma.

Tara, you are ever catching us with your hook of compassion.

Tara, you are ever binding us with your lasso of kindness.

Our courageous/strong mother is wisdom, primordially perfected; she holds all beings as if her only child.

Our actions and prayers will deliver the ordinary and supreme accomplishments; when the kayas and wisdoms are perfected, the two-fold benefit will be complete –

Tara, you are a wish-granting jewel, the source of all we desire.

Tara, dear mother, the confused children of the six-realms and so on, all arise from you.

To see the mutual dependence between mother and child is what it means to be your child.

When things collapse on their own ground, this is what it means to be your child.

To see the unfailing law of karma and its results is what it means to be your child.

To have an attitude of disillusionment and a desire to leave samsara is what it means to be your child.

To have connate ignorance confuse you is separation from mother.

To grasp and obsess at an independent identity, an autonomous self, is separation from mother.

To embrace samsara is separation from mother.

To enact the ten virtuous deeds is what it means to be your child.

To engage the three higher trainings is what it means to be your child.

To take up the perverse is separation from mother.

To see the emptiness of things is what it means to be your child.

To see emptiness as dependent arising is what it means to be your child.

To fall into the extremes of permanence and nihilism is separation from mother.

To know the suchness of my mind is what it means to be your child.

To know the illusory nature of the relative is what it means to be your child.

To succumb to the extremist’s view of true existence is separation from mother.

To know all beings as having had the experience of being a parent, wishing to repay their kindness, etc., is what it means to be your child.

To grasp at autonomous existence, and indulge attachment and aversion, is separation from mother.

To view myself and all other beings as equals and to actively exchange my happiness for their pain, is what it means to be your child.

In particular, to have perfected wisdom and crossed to the other shore is to be comparable with you, mother Tara.

To be without vows and samaya is separation from mother.

To be completely addicted to my own goals is separation from mother.

To know the pain and sufferings of all six classes of being is what it means to be your child.

To know the concordant cause of dukkha is what it means to be your child.

To be without trust in future lives is separation from mother.

To be indifferent to the suffering of others is separation from mother.

To see my mind as the actual Sugata is what it means to be your child.

To see my aggregates and elements as deities is what it means to be your child.

To grasp at ordinariness, the flesh and blood of my aggregates, etc., is separation from mother.

To see freedom from affirmation and negation is what it means to be your child.

To see the ineffable union of clarity and emptiness is what it means to be your child.

To see the all-pervading union of awareness and emptiness is what it means to be your child.

Tara, you are the wisdom that is primordially free – the very essence of all.

To see how the world and its inhabitants never really came into being is what it means to be your child.

To have impure vision, to see the ordinariness of thing, earth, stones, and so on, is separation from mother.

To believe in an origin, place or mode of abidance, and a destination of things is separation from mother.

To see through the facade of an origin, place or mode of abidance, and a destination of things is what it means to be your child.

To entertain desire and the other four destructive emotions is separation from mother.

To be rid of those emotions by seeing their innate wisdom five-fold is what it means to be your child.

To see the channels, elements, energies and mind as ordinary is separation from mother.

To see them as the spontaneous three kayas is what it means to be your child.

To have objective reality arise as suchness itself is what it means to be your child.

To isolate yourself and persist with ridiculous notions of mediation, is separation from mother.

To have the profound clarity of deity, mantra and meditation is what it means to be your child.

To meditate on ordinary, material things is separation from mother.

To be without compassion and bodhicitta is separation from mother.

To have love, compassion and liberation upon sight is to be your equal.

To have a dry, intellectual understanding of secret mantra and spout mere words is separation from mother.

To have faith and pure vision is what it means to be your child.

To put down others dharma because of attachment and aversion is separation from mother.

To remember the unfailing karmic law of cause and effect is what it means to be your child.

To give up selfish pursuits is what it means to be your child.

To be continually altruistic is what it means to be your child.

To reverse the flow of the branch winds in the central channel is what it means to be your child.

The brilliance of unified bliss and emptiness is what it means to be your child:

The sudden experience of self-arisen wisdom, the primordial expanse, causes the subtle impure karmic winds to cease and innate great bliss – the ultimate nature of the mother – to emerge with ease.

The experience of all-pervasive great bliss is gathered within an ineffable single drop – the dharmakaya, natural luminosity itself. This in turn gives rise to myriad forms of the sambogakaya – appearing without impediment or obscuration.

The environment is subsumed within bliss conjoined with emptiness – the expanse of suchness itself. Its inhabitants, spontaneous luminosity conjoined with emptiness – appearing without cessation: this is the great equating of samsara and nirvana within purity. Wonderful!

The actual guru is the genuine nature of awareness itself, from which no sentient being has ever been apart. It is revealed through the direct instructions of the guru – if not in him, to whom should we go for refuge?

The primordially pure expanse, the wisdom of Samantabhadri, is the single drop – the spontaneous union of awareness and emptiness, within which the sole father, Samantabhadra, remains with neither hope nor fear, completely free from the need to accept or reject; devoid of ground and source, coming and going.

Whatever is desired arises is the play of bodhicitta – primordially perfect, free from fragmentation and partiality. The five wisdoms perfected is the great perfection. Ah.

All actions are perfect, as are all paths, qualities, and minds; perfected within great primordial purity.

Longchen Rabjam (infinite, vast expanse) is the jewel who sits in my heart; within this expanse, free from all extremes, any notion of impure simply vanishes; whatever is wished for emerges from its dynamic display – the source of enlightened activity

All pervasive, enduring and without end, she is continually liberating the three realms – may we all come under the protection of Noble Tara and be free from confusion, disease, famine and war.

I prostrate at the feet of protector of the Land of Snows, Tenzin Gyatso: Holder of the White Lotus and Buddha in whom all Buddha-families are complete. Protector of us all, I pray to you; forever remain amongst us for the continual liberation of all beings.

May all beings continually hold renunciation, bodhicitta and the correct view in their hearts.

The auspicious Buddha Samantabhadra, renowned as auspicious; may there be the auspiciousness of the dharmakaya – abiding without change!

The auspicious of the Five Buddha Families, renowned as auspicious; may there be the auspiciousness of the sambogakaya – meaningful to behold!

The auspicious nirmanakaya, guide and tamer of beings, renowned as auspicious; may there be the auspiciousness of the guru – knowing one liberates all!

By the truth of the oceanic forms of the Three Jewels and the Three Roots, may there be the realization of the unmistaken karmic law of cause and effect!

Within the non-conceptual nature of the three spheres: the mutual dependence of the prayer, its expression and object – Ah…

Practice Avalokiteshvara Guru Yoga to Help Overcome Covid-19

His Holiness the Dalai Lama in front of Avalokiteshvara.

Advice from Khadro-la

I recently shared a message from Khadro-la to help during Covid-19.

That message included the following advice:

"I have been asked what could be done to quickly bring this disease to an end. My advice is to practice the Guru Yoga of the Supreme Arya who has the Lotus in his Hand (Chenrezig) inseparable with the one who embodies the great compassion of all the Conquerors, the manifestation of the union of emptiness and great compassion, the dispeller of the three times (His Holiness the Dalai Lama)."

Avalokiteshvara Guru Yoga

The practice Khadro-la recommends, The Inseparability of the Spiritual Master and Avalokiteshvara: A Source of All Powerful Attainments (Avalokiteshvara Guru Yoga), composed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama at age nineteen, is available for free download from FPMT.

The practice text contains this message from His Holiness:

" ... This devoti􏰁on contains a short glance meditation on the enti􏰁re graduated path and the mantras of the master and Avalokiteshvara. Although it is improper for me to write such a devo􏰁tion about myself, waves of inspira􏰁tion of the buddhas can be received from ordinary beings just as relics can come from a dog's tooth. Therefore, I have composted this with the hope of benefiti􏰁ng a few faithful disciples.

The Buddhist monk
Ngawang Losang Tenzin Gyatso
maintaining the 􏰁title of Holder of the White Lotus (Avalokiteshvara)"

The practice text mentions that this is a practice that can be done by anyone.

Practice Advice

Venerable Tenzin Namjong, an American monk in the geshe studies program at Sera Jey Monastery in South India, recently gave advice on how to do this practice as a retreat along with the accumulation of 600,000 OM MANI PADME HUNG mantras to help overcome Covid-19.

Three Mantras to Recite During Covid-19

Guru Padmasambava (Guru Rinpoche) painting by His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa.

It has been advised that people recite these three mantras as much as possible.

The Mantras

Mani Mantra

OM MANI PADME HUM

Guru Padmasambava Mantra

OM AH HUM BENZA GURU PEDMA SIDDHI HUM

Tara Mantra

OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SOHA

Translator Fabrizio Pallotti reports:

04/01/2020 - Few days ago, at night, I got this text in Tibetan on WhatsApp. I immediately understood that it must have been important, since Khandro Rinpoche herself sent it from her private number. Upon reading it, I also understood how profound and vast is the meaning enclosed in these few words. Thus, I thought, in order to be able to translate even roughly, required explanations. So I immediately replied thanking the kind Guru and I also sent Her a message asking if she could be so kind as to read the text together with me and provide explanations as well.

My request was immediately accepted, just like Mother Tara who immediately responds to the requests of her children, we the sentient beings. For more than an hour, again via WhatsApp video, I was able to listen and clarify many of the difficult points of the text. I noted the explanations of the difficult passages in the footnotes. Being unable to absorb and understand the profound meaning of each syllable uttered by Guru Tara, I am sure that my translation cannot perfectly reflect the vastness of the meanings expressed by Her words. For this, i offer my sincere apologies.

However, the general sense of the text and the important meaning is certainly conveyed. I hope it will offer all Dharma brothers and sisters great help during these difficult times and for the future ahead.

By Khadro Namsel Dorje Rinpoche (also known as
Rangjung Neljorma Khadro Namsel Drönme and Khadro-la)

Dorje Rinpoche Ogyen Rinpoche [1], please help!

Due to the karmic appearances of sentient beings in this degenerated bad time, the world is pervaded by a pandemic disease. We have fallen into a prison without shelter and without hope, isolated, without protection and without an army we cry out in despair.

The epidemic has turned heaven and earth upside down: I ask the Buddhas of the three times [2] to listen to me.

I reveal openly that, because sentient beings cling to a self while the self does not exist, externally the elements are disturbed.

I reveal openly that, due to the hallucinated mind grasping at true existence while true existence does not exist, beings are appropriated by the three poisons.

I reveal openly that, controlled by the black poisonous snake of self-conception, we act for our victory, while pursuing the defeat of others.

This hallucinated mind grasping to a self and true existence, conceives samsara perfections as if they were a pure refuge. Suddenly the deadly epidemic comes, the graveyard of the maturation of actions, and the samsara perfections, like dirt and stones [3], become devoid of happiness: the time has come for great affection and great compassion [4]. The experience of ripening in accordance with causes and their effects [5] is certain, the dependent relationship is undeceiving.

In the objective and vibrant appearance, the sensory object that brings happiness is grasped with attachment and appropriated by sentient beings [6]. But it is like a dream: bless me so that I may see dependent arising and emptiness, bless me so that I may see emptiness and dependent arising.

After realizing that dependent arising does not exist intrinsically, bless me to see the reality of the mind.

Controlled by the hallucinated mind that conceives a self that does not exist, the chronic sickness of selfishness that protects friends and eliminates enemies, destroys this and future lives in a continuum of suffering like the ripples of water. Not understanding that sentient beings are our mothers and their kindness, we act with ingratitude [7]: this I reveal openly.

I reveal openly that, after entering the cycle of pure Dharma of the vajra vehicle, I have degenerated the samayas received through initiation.

Vajradhara [8], from the sphere of Dharmakaya without elaborations, you are the precious treasure that fulfills all desires and needs. Vajradhara, white lotus of emptiness and compassion, venerable pervading all families [9], dispeller of the three times [10], you are the only refuge [11] that eliminates the darkness of ignorance. You are the Buddha [12], but I considered you a normal human being: this I reveal openly.

Though I have received the teachings of infallibility of action and results, like performing a theatrical act I wear the mask of Dharma while supporting my life by corrupted means [13]: this I reveal openly.

I reveal openly that, although there is no other refuge but the three rare and supreme, I relied on non-Buddhist teachings [14].

I reveal openly that, although there are various vehicles within the pure Dharma, I let the mind pursue the erroneous views of psychology [15].

I openly reveal that, although the freedoms and endowments are difficult to obtain and are highly meaningful, the useless activities increase.

I reveal openly that, although I possess the wisdom of the primordial mind [16], I do not see that my mind is the Dharmakaya.

Not understanding how appearances arise from the base [17], I regard Dharmakaya and Nirmanakaya as newly produced [18]: that I openly reveal.

In short, thanks to the strength of the Lama's kindness [19] I can realize that all appearances of samsaric beings are devoid of true existence, always free, self liberated, directly free [20].

Lama Vajradhara, you are the embodiment of all three roots, you are our only refuge and hope satisfying all wishes. From the magical illusion of the three supreme bodies, precious omniscient compassionate [21], I beg you to pacify epidemics, famines and wars.

In the state without referent I reveal all the negative actions of the three doors of us sentient beings affected by ignorance [22]. Though the confession, who confesses and the object of confession do not exist [23], I confess as an illusion [24], in the state of non intrinsic nature.

Dharma friends close to me and acquaintances [25], please apply yourselves in Dharma reflecting on the difficulty of obtaining freedoms and endowments, apply yourselves in the Dharma of adventitious impermanence; apply yourselves in the Dharma of infallibility of actions and their results; apply yourselves in Dharma reflecting on the disadvantages of samsara; apply yourselves in Dharma reflecting on the advantages of liberation; apply yourselves in Dharma reflecting on universal responsibility. Compassion, altruism, and the mind of enlightenment are the precious riches that do not deceive.

In particular, apply yourself in the Dharma of the vajra vehicle of the secret mantra that frees upon meeting it. Apply yourself in the Dharma which is the sublime essence, endowed with emptiness and great compassion, the spontaneous and perfect nature [26].

Rest assured that the Dharma is solely to pacify yourself and benefitting others. Stop worrying! If you rely on powerful deities [27], all suffering becomes an aid to happiness. Never separate yourself, even at the cost of your life, from the refuge of the three rare and supreme ones, who do not deceive [28].

Faith and compassion are the foundation of all that you desire, do not be afraid! Make requests from the bottom of your heart. Ask continually for blessings from the lama deity.

In case you can act on the results of your actions, what is the purpose of worrying and being sorry. In the case that you cannot do anything about the results of actions, what is the purpose of worrying and being sorry.

If you recite the mantras Mani, Benza and Tare [29], with requests, you will certainly free yourself from all obstacles.

May there be the auspiciousness of the Lama and the three jewels!

May there be the auspiciousness of reality free from denial and affirmation!

May there be the auspiciousness of happiness of sentient beings, the mothers!

May there be the auspiciousness of seeing the compassionate lama!

May there be the auspiciousness of spontaneous fulfillment of the four enlightened activities!

May there be the auspiciousness of seeing and hearing the excellent path of liberation!

May there be the auspiciousness of spontaneous fulfillment of the fruition of the spontaneous realization of the three exalted bodies!

May there be the auspiciousness of complete prosperity!

Right now, due to the coronavirus pandemic disease that has spread throughout the world, human beings are afraid of losing their lives and suffering of multiple losses, such as financial loss. Therefore, just like one family, the beings on this planet are all experiencing great torment together. I have been asked what could be done to quickly bring this disease to an end. My advice is to practice the Guru Yoga of the Supreme Arya who has the Lotus in his Hand (Chenrezig) inseparable with the one who embodies the great compassion of all the Conquerors, the manifestation of the union of emptiness and great compassion, the dispeller of the three times (His Holiness the Dalai Lama).

People should recite as much as possible the mantra of the six syllables (Mani) and the mantra of the name of the maha guru (Padmasambava).

In particular, to quickly eliminate the disease, I think it would be of great benefit if Tibetan and allopathic medicine, in combination, sought a remedy or vaccine. As for myself, being a Buddhist, I make intense requests to the three rare and precious ones, which are infallible, and I practice as much as possible the four enlightened activities combined with prayers.

After having received sincere requests from many friends from around the world, I have composed this writing on March 30, 2020.

Khadro Namsel Dorje

Footnotes:

1 Guru Padmasambava

2 Three times. past, present and future

3 What is considered happiness until then, has become useless.

4 The time has come to be protected.

5 The ripening of action results is certain.

6 Though it is like a dream, ordinary beings grasp it as true and generate attachment as it was
extremely precious.

7 Instead of feeling gratitude for beings who are our kind mothers.

8 Vajradhara Lama. Ogyen Rinpoche, who embodies all the Buddhas of the three times who have assumed that aspect, is His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

9 The families of the Buddhas or if the Vajradhara and incarnate all Buddhas.

10 Eliminate the sufferings of the three times, past, present and future.

11 The only refuge for the suffering beings is you alone, incarnating all Buddhas, the essence of emptiness and great compassion, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the supreme emanation Lama.

12 Though is indeed the Buddha, I regarded him as an ordinary human being, like myself, only because he appears or I see him as a human being. This I confess.

13 Many act in this way under the pretense of being Dharma practitioners.

14 The only infallible refuge are three rare and supreme ones, yet I still rely on others who are not Buddhas. In this way one abandons the Dharma which is the union of compassion and emptiness.

15 When I asked whether this passage actually refers to Western psychology, Khandro Rinpoche laughed and said that some people first consider the teachings of Buddha as very important and then, not being able to draw real value from the practice, think that are not so valuable and prefer Western psychology. Laughing she went on to say that they don't realize they are the ones not practicing correctly while thinking that it is the Dharma that is of little value. So they turn to Western psychology thinking that it is of much greater value. They don't understand emptiness and find it easier and more effective what is in fact a conceptual distraction in comparison.

16 In the Sutras this is the seed of Buddha, the element of Tathagata, in tantra is the ultimate nature of the mind of emptiness and compassion.

17 This refers to the nature of the mind as explained and shown in the fourth initiation, the nature of Dharmakaya, purity beyond suffering. The basis are the environments like the Mandala and the beings that are contained in these as deities.Together with the mind of enlightenment and emptiness, all appear from the mind itself. Mandalas and deities are not created as new. These are the very special and uncommon aspects of the vajra vehicle, the secret mantra.

18 Their nature is already present in us, but not seeing this reality we think they are produced separately outside of us, as new. This is the great contradiction I confess.

19 This is because it is necessary to rely on a lama with experience, able to show the ultimate nature of emptiness.

20 These are terms of the Great Perfection, Dzogchen, analogous to the terms extreme emptiness, great emptiness, total emptiness, which refer to experiences just before the clear primordial light. This is the emptiness used as the definitive antidote to all afflictions, with the realization of the emptiness of subject and object, the antidote to all afflictions. This wisdom free from elaboration is the antidote to all afflictions. This is the meaning of self liberated and directly free.

21 His Holiness embodies all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

22 I make this confession while understanding emptiness.

23 Though they are not inherently existing

24 The nature of happiness and suffering is like an illusion, in that nature I confess.

25 These are her advises for friends and acquaintances.

26 The union of emptiness and compassion, the ultimate truth of Bodhicitta, the Dharmakaya, the purity of the three secrets, Dharmakaya, Samboghakaya and Nirmanakaya present in us.

27 Continuously rely on the Guru, Yidam, Daka and Dakini making requests

28 In any situation of happiness or suffering, always entrust yourself to the Three Jewels and never lose your faith. That is, if you entrust yourself to the understanding of the mind of enlightenment and emptiness, all problems and suffering become an aid to happiness.

29 Om Mani Padme Hum; Om Ah Hum Benza Guru Pedma Siddhi Hum; Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha.
