No car? No problem.

I donated my car to Home At Last Animal Rescue towards the end of last year. (The nonprofit, mostly volunteer org that rescued my dog, Sabrina from the Pinole City Shelter, and then adopted her out to me.) So I might not own a car anymore, but I still have a few options!

A real-time cab-sharing system for NYC cab patrons - Wheeels.

When a user enters a destination, the app matches the request with others who are nearby planning to travel in the same direction. If it doesn't find a match nearby, then the app allows the user to either order a cab immediately or wait for other people in the area who want to go in the same direction.

Currently in beta release, Getaround is a peer-to-peer car sharing service that uses smartphone and in-car technology to match car owners with neighbors who need to borrow them. For as little as $3 an hour, members can conveniently rent nearby cars by the hour, day or week.

Seriously?

Also check out RelayRides, the world's first neighbor-to-neighbor car-sharing service. The company is already operating in San Francisco, CA and Boston, MA.

UK residents can check out WhipCar. In order to use WhipCar you must have a UK drivers license and you must be 21+ years old.

Don't Buy Heartache for the Holidays :: Adopt

My dog Sabrina came from the Oakland, California-based Home At Last Animal Rescue. Sabrina was found running around in a parking lot in Richmond, California and a police officer took her to a "kill shelter" - the Pinole Animal Shelter. On her last day - the day she was scheduled to be euthanized because no one had come to claim or adopt her - a volunteer from Home At Last saw her at the shelter and decided to take her home and give her another chance.

Sabrina was fostered at the volunteer's home for several months before I found Sabrina on the website Petfinder.com, where she had been listed for adoption.

Here's Sabrina, 5+ years later! Ready for Santa Claus!
