"Venerable Matthieu Ricard is a Buddhist monk, author, translator and photographer. Born in France in 1946 to a philosopher father and an artist mother, he did his Ph.D in Cell Genetics. After completing his dissertation in 1972, he felt a calling to be near his Buddhist teacher, Kanjyur Rinpoche whom he had met during his first visit to India in 1967. After the passing away of Kanjyur Rinpoche, he studied with Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, one of most revered and beloved masters of the Nyingma tradition, but an authority on all the schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

"Matthieu La has been living in the Himalayan region for the past 45 years, and has spent his life devoted to serving his teachers, studying, practicing and teaching the essence of Dharma through his books, all of which have been bestsellers.

"He is an authority on happiness and the ultimate embodiment of altruism. He oversees the projects of Karuna-Shechen under the aegis of Rabjam Rinpoche, which is actively serving the underprivileged, and having a special focus on empowerment of women in Bihar and Jharkhand in India and also in Nepal.

"Matthieu La has an innate ability to bring together ancient wisdom and scientific insights. Some of his most notable books are – Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill; Why Meditate?; and The Monk and the Philosopher, a dialogue with his father, Jean Francois Revel, to name a few."

"For many years Matthieu Ricard has been photographing the landscapes, spiritual masters, and people of the magnificent Himalayan region. His work is exhibited in museums and art galleries throughout the world. He is the author and photographer of a number of photography books including Bhutan: Ode to Beauty, The Land of Serenity, Motionless Journey: From a Hermitage in the Himalayas, and Tibet: An Inner Journey.
