Recap of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's May 16 and 17 Livestreamed Teachings

On Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17, 2020 (Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 in PT) His Holiness the Dalai Lama gave teachings which were livestreamed from his residence in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India.

This is the first time since arriving in India that His Holiness gave a teaching without an audience.

His most recent public teachings were in January 2020.

Translated into Thirteen Languages

This weekend's teachings were given in Tibetan with simultaneous translation in thirteen languages.

The Indian Express reported on May 15, “'While five translators who will be translating the teachings in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Portuguese and Korean are based in Dharamshala, there are translators based in Taiwan, Moscow, Frankfurt, Toulouse etc. Another based in Portland, USA, will translate the teachings in Japanese, while one in New Delhi will translate in Hindi,'” Tseten S Chhoekyapa, Secretary, Dalai Lama’s private office, told The Indian Express.

"Tseten added, 'His Holiness has also asked all his followers to maintain social distancing and adhere to norms prescribed by their respective countries…while watching the teaching sessions. It will be the first time His Holiness will not have a public audience in front of him.'

"'We had requests from many Tibetan Buddhist centres, Tibetan monasteries, people who admire His Holiness, journalists from across the globe, individuals and organisations, both Buddhist and non-Buddhist. So the teachings shall also be webcast without a second’s delay with the video live in 13 languages,' Tseten further said."

“'The appeal was made by Kashag on behalf of Tibetans and millions of Buddhists around the world who would benefit and take renewed strength from His Holiness’ teachings,'” said Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay."

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is in Extremely Good Health

The Indian Express story also contained good news about His Holiness's health.

Tseten said, "'You will see his health on the 16th. He is in extremely good health. He gets up at around 3.30–4 am and says his prayers. He takes his breakfast around 6.30 am and then gets into meditation and prayers. He goes to bed around 6.30 pm so that he can get a good 8-9 hours of sleep. It is very important for him so that when he wakes up next morning, he feels very rested and relaxed. His Holiness is a very active person. He does a lot of exercise, walking these days.'"

The Teachings

On May 16 and 17 His Holiness gave advice for these challenging times and taught on Chapters 1 and 4 of Arya Nagarjuna's text Precious Garland.

 May 16 (Day 1) Summary

Dalailama.com shared a summary of the May 16 teaching. They quoted His Holiness who taught, “Sentient beings including even insects are all the same in wanting happiness and seeking to avoid suffering. There is no dispute about this. We tend to rely on physical and sensory sources of pleasure, but without peace of mind, we won’t be consistently happy. Material development has greatly improved our physical facilities, but peace of mind is not manufactured by machines in some factory, we have to create it within.

“I’m a human being, one of the seven billion on this earth, and I believe that if people were more at peace within, they would be happier. These days, scientists are looking into this too. Ancient Indian knowledge included a rich understanding of the workings of the mind and emotions. Buddhism is part of this. In addition to advice about love and compassion, ancient Indian tradition was accomplished in its cultivation of concentration and analytic meditation. However, there is no need for these skills to be confined to religious practice; we can all incorporate them into our own lives.”

His Holiness ended with this message, reported on dalailama.com:

“This is the first time I’ve taught in this way,” His Holiness concluded. “I hope that in future we may be able to invite questions and have more interaction. Physically, at present, we have to remain apart, but by this means we can hold discussions together. Goodbye—see you tomorrow.”
