Swarthmore College: Fossil Fuel Divestment Dominos

I have been closely following the college student-led fossil fuels divestment movement. It is quickly growing, with many students citing Bill McKibben as an influence in their decision to take action.

Check out this recent New York Times piece: To Stop Climate Change, Students Aim at College Portfolios. The article mentions that Swarthmore College trustees agreed to divest from South Africa in 1986, "but only after a series of confrontational tactics by students, including brief occupations of the president’s office." The article also noted "Students said they were well aware that the South Africa campaign succeeded only after on-campus actions like hunger strikes, sit-ins and the seizure of buildings. Some of them are already having talks with their parents about how far to go."

This rally took place on Friday while representatives of the student group Swarthmore Mountain Justice were meeting with members of the Board of Managers. According to the Swarthmore website "the Board is charged with the general management of the affairs of the College and discharges that duty directly in management of the endowment ..."

Look out for more news about the Power Up! Divest Fossil Fuels Student Convergence 2013, a student-led convergence that will be taking place at Swarthmore from February 22 - 24. More than 150 students representing schools across the country will attend the convergence.
