Happy (belated) Generosity Day!

This post I wrote originally appeared on Care2.com:

How will you be celebrating Valentine’s Day this year? With some ethically-sourced chocolate or flowers? How about with some generosity?

About a year ago, Sasha Dichter, Acumen Fund’s Chief Innovation Officer, decided to spend the month of December saying “yes” to everyone who asked him for money – a homeless person, a street musician, a nonprofit. Prior to this, his gut response was to say “no.” He said that this was keeping him from being the open, generous person that he wanted to be.

Sasha then got together with with Katya Andreson of Network for Good, Scott Case of Malaria No More, and Ellen McGirt of Fast Company to reboot Valentine’s Day as Generosity Day.

What does that mean? As Sasha said, it’s “… one day of sharing love with everyone, of being generous to everyone, to see how it feels and to practice saying Yes.”

Sustainable Surf: sustainability in action

This post I wrote originally appeared on Care2.com:

Care2 recently published a post about the greening of the surfing industry, in which we briefly mentioned Sustainable Surf.

Sustainable Surf is a newer nonprofit based in Southern California that helps the surfing industry and community become examples of sustainability in action. The organization recently launched a new program called Waste to Waves.

The program’s first campaign is “Turn Your Trash Into Slash,” meaning you can give the organization your styrofoam and a Southern California company Marko will turn it into new surfboards. Partner stores in Northern and Southern California have receptacles available for customers’ use, and at least one school group, 7th Grade science class at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, ran a drive to collect community members’ styrofoam for recycling by Waste to Waves.

The Island President

This post I wrote originally appeared on Care2.com:

If you follow climate change news, then you’re likely familiar with Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed, the first democratically elected leader of the small island nation. President of the lowest country in the world, with 80% of its land rising only a meter above sea level, President Nasheed has been a global voice for action to address the climate crisis. In 2009, he and Maldives government officials held an underwater cabinet meeting to make a statement about what will happen to the island by the year 2100 if the world does not act on climate change.

In September the Maldives pledged to go carbon neutral by 2020, which would make it the first nation to do so. On January 23, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke announced that the band’s music “was used to help tell the story” of President Nasheed in new documentary The Island President. This week’s news on the Maldives hasn’t been quite as positive. A military coup in what seems to have been carried out by police forced President Nasheed from office on Tuesday morning, at gunpoint and with threats of violence. He was placed under house arrest, and Bill McKibben’s organization 350.org put out an alert stating that his life could be in danger. That same day, President Nasheed’s successor, Mohammed Waheed Hassan, the former vice president, was sworn in as the President of the Maldives.

McDonald's (Restaurant?) offends Pit Bulls

McDonald's radio promo:

McDonald's apologizes. Kind of:

Too late, I suspect. Some of my favorite photos from Bay Area Dog Owners Responsible About Pit Bulls (BAD RAP)'s McDonald's Facebook campaign:

PS- love BAD RAP's Facebook posts. Yep, that's a plug for their page.

UndocuHealth: a new Hotline for DREAMers

From CNN:

Joaquin Luna was only 18. The senior at Juarez Lincoln High School in Mission, Texas, dreamed of going to college. But since he was in the country illegally, that was nearly impossible. Luna was quickly losing hope of ever going to college, his family says. The Friday after Thanksgiving, Luna put on a suit, kissed his family members, went into the bathroom and shot himself in the head, according to family members. "He didn't see no other way or no other option," his brother Diyra Mendoza told CNN affiliate KGBT.

Senator Dick Durbin gave a moving tribute to Joaquin on the Senate floor.

Sadly, this story continues. I grabbed this from a petition that I signed, on behalf of another DREAMer:

Twenty two year-old Yanelli Hernadez Serrano came to the United States when she was only 13 years old. Since that age, she has largely been independent and has had to work in order to sustain herself. Yanelli is currently facing deportation because she showed a police officer her consulate I.D. card as a form of identification, as she lacked a driver's license. While in detention, Yanelli lost hope and attempted to take her life twice.

After attempting suicide she was placed in solitary confinement, naked but for a blanket, and was given prozac. Despite the efforts of concerned persons, Yanelli was deported to Mexico on January 31.

In Yanelli's honor UndocuHealth.org was launched that very same day. UndocuHealth is a project that will provide undocumented youth with mental health support - whether it be connecting the youth with free resources or providing them with access to someone to talk to. The UndocuHealth Crisis Line will be a toll-free, bi-lingual hotline that anyone can call, at anytime to talk to a live person. The organizers are planning to offer services in languages beyond English and Spanish.

UndocuHealth is seeking donations so that they can train the volunteers who will be answering the telephone calls. I can't remember ever posting a fundraising plea on my blog, but will you consider making a financial contribution to support this program? To stay current follow UndocuHealth on Twitter.

While I'm promoting financial contributions, I was so relieved to hear that fifteen-year old Lidiane Carmo, whose family was killed in a tragic Florida vehicle accident, will not be deported to Brazil or charged by US Immigration authorities. She does, however need financial aid to pay her hospital bills, bring her family members' bodies back home, and to hold a funeral.

Don't be a sucker.

Visiting London, England? Check out this list of London bars and restaurants participating in the Straw Wars campaign. The idea is simple – either get rid of straws completely or provide a straw only when requested by a customer. If they want one, all they have to do is ask. It’s that easy. Now is your opportunity to be part of the solution. We are extending this invitation to all bars and restaurants. Join us in the movement to eradicate plastic drinking straws.

Thanks to Surfrider San Francisco Chapter member Rachel Kippen for tweeting the
UK Guardian article that taught me about Straw Wars!

Hopefully SF will follow suit and eliminate plastic straws
